The drive belt tensioner keeps the correct tension on the accessory belt that drives the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. It uses a spring-loaded arm and a pulley bearing to absorb the constant changes in belt load as the engine speeds up and slows down. When the spring weakens or the bearing dries out, the belt starts to slip.

Symptoms of a worn tensioner are a squeal or chirp from the front of the engine that is loudest on a cold start or when the air conditioning switches on, a visible flutter in the belt at idle, a rumble or grinding from the tensioner pulley, and in the worst case a shredded or thrown belt — which on most JLR engines also stops the water pump and causes rapid overheating. UAE heat shortens tensioner life, so this is a part worth replacing preventatively at belt change.

Common questions

Should I replace the belt at the same time? Yes. A new belt on a worn tensioner will slip and squeal, and a new tensioner on a glazed belt will not cure the noise. Replace both together.

How long does a tensioner last? Typically 90,000 to 120,000 km, but Gulf heat and stop-start city driving can cut that considerably. Inspect it at every belt service.

What is the difference between a drive belt tensioner and an idler pulley? The tensioner is spring-loaded and applies pressure to the belt. An idler pulley simply guides the belt and has no spring — both can fail with similar noises.
