Can I still drive it?
Usually yes, in the short term. A worn mount mostly makes the car shake and knock. Get it checked soon: a broken mount lets the engine move more, which puts extra load on the other mounts, hoses and pipes. If the engine warning light is on or the engine runs rough, the cause is probably not a mount. Have the fault read first.
Symptoms
Tick what you notice. Two or more usually point to a mount.
Narrow it down
Two questions point you to the most likely part.
When do you notice it?
How does the engine run?
Answer both questions to see the most likely cause.
Shake at idle in D that eases in N or P usually points to an engine mount. Check the mounts for cracks or fluid, and watch the engine move with a helper.
A clunk when you select D or R often comes from the gearbox mount or the lower engine mount. Watch the engine as a helper shifts, with the brake held firmly.
A rough engine or a warning light points to a misfire or another engine fault. Have the fault codes read before you buy mounts.
Vibration that only comes at speed usually comes from wheels, tyres or drive shafts. Check wheel balance and the drive shaft joints first.
Likely causes, most common first
Mounts hold the engine and gearbox in place and soak up vibration. When their rubber wears, the shake reaches the cabin.

01Worn engine mount Most common
Engine mounts use rubber, and some are filled with fluid. Over time and with heat, the rubber cracks or sags and fluid-filled mounts can leak. The engine then moves more and passes vibration into the body.
Check: Look for cracked or split rubber and oily stains on the mount. With a helper, watch how much the engine moves.

02Worn gearbox mount Common
The gearbox mount carries the back of the engine and gearbox. When it wears, you feel a clunk as you shift into D or R, or when you pull away.
Check: Have a helper hold the brake firmly and shift between D and R while you watch the gearbox from the side.

03Misfire or rough idle Common
A misfiring engine shakes even with good mounts. Worn spark plugs, ignition coils or air leaks can cause it, and the engine warning light often comes on.
Check: If the engine warning light is on or the engine sounds uneven, have the fault codes read first.
04Drive shaft or prop shaft joint Less common
Worn drive shaft or prop shaft joints can clunk when you pull away and vibrate at speed. They are often mistaken for mounts.
Check: Look for torn boots and grease around the drive shaft joints behind the wheels.
Check all the mounts. When one mount fails, the others carry more load. Check every mount when you replace one, and replace any that are cracked or leaking.
Checks you can do
No special tools. Do these before you buy parts.
Compare D and N
At idle with your foot on the brake, shift from D to N. If the shake drops a lot in N, a mount is likely.
Watch the engine move
With a helper holding the brake firmly, shift between D and R. Stand to the side, never in front. A big jump or knock points to a worn mount.
Look at the mounts
With a torch, look for cracked rubber, a sagging mount or oily stains.
Try the AC
At idle, switch the AC on and off. A shake that grows with the AC on often points to worn mounts.
Check for warning lights
If the engine warning light is on, have the fault read first. A misfire can feel like a bad mount.

FAQ
Can I drive with a worn engine mount?
Usually yes, in the short term. Get it checked soon, because a broken mount lets the engine move more and puts load on the other mounts, hoses and pipes.
How many mounts does my car have?
Most cars have several: engine mounts on each side and a gearbox mount, and many also have a lower torque mount. The number and part numbers change by model and engine. Send your VIN and we tell you which ones yours uses.
Should I replace all the mounts together?
Not always. Replace the worn ones, and check the others at the same time, because a failed mount puts more load on the rest.
Are aftermarket mounts any good?
We stock aftermarket mounts from Eurospare and VNG next to genuine JLR. Aftermarket costs less; genuine is the factory part. Each comes with its manufacturer’s warranty.
Which mount fits my car?
Land Rover uses different mounts across models, engines and years. Send your VIN on WhatsApp and we confirm the right part number.
