Can I still drive it?
A light burning smell after a drive usually means a small oil leak onto hot parts. You can usually drive while you book it in, but keep the oil level up and fix it soon. If you see smoke coming from under the bonnet while driving, pull over safely and switch off. Don’t open the bonnet if you see flames: move away and call for help.
Symptoms
Tick what you notice. Two or more usually point to an oil leak.
Narrow it down
Two questions point you to the most likely part.
Where is the smoke or smell?
What else do you notice?
Answer both questions to see the most likely cause.
A smell after driving with oil on the engine usually comes from a gasket leaking oil onto hot parts. Clean the area and look again to see where fresh oil starts.
A whistle, rough idle or rising oil use often points to a faulty PCV (breather) valve. It can raise pressure inside the engine and push oil past seals.
Blue smoke from the exhaust means oil is burning inside the engine, often from turbo seals or valve stem seals. A workshop should check it.
Smoke from under the bonnet while driving means oil is landing on very hot parts. Pull over, switch off and check from a distance before you drive on.
Likely causes, most common first
Most burning oil smells come from a small leak onto the exhaust or engine. Find the leak, then fix the cause.

01Leaking valve cover gasket Most common
The gasket under the top cover hardens with heat and age. Oil seeps out and can drip onto the hot exhaust manifold, which causes the smell.
Check: With the engine cold, look along the edge of the top cover for wet or dirty oil.

02Faulty PCV valve Common
The PCV (breather) valve lets gases out of the engine. When it fails, pressure builds up and pushes oil past gaskets and seals. It can also cause a whistle or rough idle.
Check: Listen for a whistle at idle. A workshop can check the pressure at the oil filler cap.

03Oil cooler or filter housing gasket Common
Engine oil passes through a cooler and filter housing. Their gaskets can seep, and the leak often shows at the front or side of the engine.
Check: Look around the oil filter housing and oil cooler for wet oil after a drive.

04Turbo or valve stem seals Less common
Worn turbo seals or valve stem seals let oil into the intake or cylinders. The oil burns and shows as blue smoke from the exhaust.
Check: Blue smoke from the exhaust needs a workshop check. Note when it happens: at start-up, idle or under load.
Fix the cause of the leak. A failed PCV valve can make new gaskets leak again. If gaskets keep leaking, have the PCV valve checked. White, sweet-smelling smoke is coolant, not oil: have the cooling system checked.
Checks you can do
No special tools. Do these with the engine cold.
Look at the top cover
With a torch, look for oil along the edge of the top cover and around the coils.
Find the drips
Park overnight on clean ground or cardboard. Note where the drips land.
Check the oil level
Use the dipstick or the oil level display, depending on your model. Note how fast it drops.
Listen at idle
With the engine running, listen for a whistle or sucking sound near the top of the engine.
Note the smoke colour
Blue usually means oil, white and sweet means coolant, black means fuel.

FAQ
Is a burning oil smell dangerous?
A small leak onto hot parts mostly smells. A bigger leak can smoke and, in rare cases, catch fire. Fix it soon, and stop at once if you see heavy smoke.
Can I just keep topping up the oil?
Keep the level right, but fix the leak. Oil on hot parts keeps smelling, and a low oil level can damage the engine.
Why replace the PCV valve?
A failed PCV valve raises pressure inside the engine. That pushes oil past seals and gaskets and can cause a whistle, rough idle or oil use.
Are aftermarket gaskets any good?
We stock Victor Reinz and IML gaskets and valves next to genuine JLR. Victor Reinz is a well-known gasket maker. Aftermarket costs less; genuine is the factory part. Each comes with its manufacturer’s warranty.
Which part fits my car?
Land Rover uses different gaskets and PCV valves across engines and years. Send your VIN on WhatsApp and we confirm the right part number.
